Jake, Dick Cross (2874th) here. The 74th inherited a number of troops from the 72nd. I was wondering if you have a patch, or a picture of one, from the 2872nd. It's the only squadron we have listed that we don't have a picture of a patch for.

Hey, Jake, my sign was J.J. and I was stationed there from April '63 to March '64. As soon as I read your name in your Post of Aug 31, '07 I thought I remembered you. Do you remember a Joe Thomas, or how 'bout a former marine that came over to USAF named LeGaurd?( always in trouble for fightin'). Did you do a TDY in Libya workin' on the Helix?

Dick,
I have a color photo of the 2872nd patch, tried to upload it but could not find the 2872nd in the upload box. I have the greatest luck with photos on this site...lol

I just scanned an old photo of the 2872nd Squadron Marquee that I snapped in '64. It's kinda faded and the colors ain't too sharp . I'm going to try to post it under the '72nd directory. J.J.

Thanks Nick. I knew about that site, where did you think most of the GEEIA patch pics came from? I 'purloined' them from that site. Marvelous what a good graphics tool and a little knowledge will get you. Thanks again, Dick

The 2872 GEEIA Squadron operated out of Wheelus AFB in Tripoli, Libya in '58 and '59. I joined the Squadron there in Feb. 1960, only four or five months before everyone got reassigned to either Madrid or Athens. I was among the first to arrive at Torrejon AFB in June of 1960. We maintained the 2872 designation at Torrejon, but I do not know if the squadron number changed for the group that went to Athens. I have a photo of our "Eager Beaver" logo in front of our barracks at Torrejon, but I do not remember ever having a shoulder patch. We had caps with GEEIA on them that we wore whenever we went TDY. I have several photographs of our long haul radio equipment and the names of about 25 of the GEEIA members that served with me between June 1960 and July 1963. Interestingly, we actually had a Lieutenant that we commonly referred to as Lt. Fuzz. His name was Sam Hall. I don't think he ever caught on to the enlisted men that were saluting him with their left hand! We also had a Major Funk, whose name was William Funk and our commander was Lt. Col. John C. Kaliher. I don't remember the name of our NCO-IC, but we always referred to him as ole Sgt. Fuddy-Duddy. I would be glad to share my photographs, stories and other names, if someone could contact me with instructions on posting photos and other documents. Thanks for making this great GEEIA web site available. Roger Wyatt, rkwyatt@hotmail.com
