Athens 1965-1967

Postby Burns, Robert » October 22nd, 2013, 8:57 am

I was stationed in Glyfada from 1965 to 1967. Of course I spent most of my time out of station in Turkey, mostly at Cigli AFB in Ismir.

When I first got to Greece, everything was great. Living of base and enjoying life. Met a beautiful Greek girl and got married. That's when I spent all my time in Turkey. Seemed the squad wanted us out of station if we were married.

I was on a team with a SSGT. Daniels. Sgt. Daniels loved the base in Ismir and never wanted to leave his drinking buddies. As a new husband, that's the last thing I wanted, so I would work weekends and holidays just to get home. This apparently didn't mean much to anyone because I remained a A2 class until I left in 1967 and back to reality. Never really was a "military man".

I don't recognize anyone posting here because I wasn't in station long enough to meet and befreind anyone, but I have lots of stories about my TDY time.

I have to confess that I wouldn't have missed the experience of the time spent I Greece and Turkey. Thanks USAF.

I served with 2879th GEEIA from about mid 1967 to Jan 1969. Remember how often I was TDY to Turkey and when I look back how many dumb things I did while over there. I really enjoyed myself during this time. Enjoyed the market that was set up every week outside the squadron and I agree about the living off base. I looked at the pictures posted and recognized a few of the people in them.

A friend of mine from Crypto school and the 2045th Comm Group at Andrews AFB, MD was sent to the 2879th around September 1968. Not sure of his name, but I think it was Stewart (first or last, memory is shot). He was sorta short, from West Virginia, and had bright blond hair in a Beatles cut. I think he was R cleared, too. Don't guess you ran across him?

Do not recognize the name and that long ago unless I see a picture it would be hard to go by the description.
